Werder Bremen chief executive Thomas Eichin says they intend to keep Chelsea defender Papy Djilobodji beyond the end of this season.
After failing to land John Stones in the summer, Chelsea raised eyebrows by their decision to sign Djilobodji from Nantes as cover in defence.
The 27-year-old only mustered one minute of Premier League action for the Blues before being loaned out to Bundesliga strugglers Bremen until the end of the season.
However, the Senegal international has made an impressive start to life in Germany and Bremen have revealed they are keen to take the defender off Chelsea’s hands full-time.
“If Chelsea want to sell him, we’d be without a chance, but should they want to get him more playing time first, we’d be in the mix,” Eichin is quoted as saying by Sky Sports.
Djilobodji was named in the Bundesliga Team of the Week after his heroic weekend performance earned Bremen a draw against Hoffenheim.
Additionally, no Bremen player averages more interceptions per game in the Bundesliga than Djilobodji this season (4.8).
