Alvaro Morata has revealed Real Madrid turned down a €70m (£60.1m) offer from Chelsea in the summer.
The Spain international re-joined Madrid in July after Zinedine Zidane’s side activated the buy-back clause in their deal with Juventus but the European champions were widely expected to cash in on the striker.
Chelsea were one of many teams interested in signing the 23-year-old this summer and were even prepared to make him the most expensive Spanish player of all-time, but Madrid turned down the chance to nearly triple their investment.
“Chelsea were the club that showed the most interest in me,” Morata told Sport Bild, via AS.
“[Chelsea manager] Antonio Conte had already signed me at Juventus and it was a great offer. I would have been the most expensive Spanish player ever.
“Chelsea offered £70m, but Real Madrid said that I was part of their plans and that has always been my dream.”
Despite willing to shatter the £50m Chelsea paid Liverpool to sign Fernando Torres in 2011, Morata has failed to reach double figures for goals in a single league campaign in all of his previous six league campaigns.
