Kevin Wimmer has today completed his move from Tottenham to Stoke for a deal worth £18m.
The Austrian underwent his medical on Monday having said his farewells to the players and staff after Spurs’ 1-1 draw with Burnley at the weekend and has penned a five-year deal with the Potters.
“Stoke City are delighted to announce the signing of Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Wimmer in an £18M deal,” a statement read on the club’s official website.
“The highly-regarded Austrian international has penned a five-year deal at the bet365 Stadium after the two clubs shook hands on an agreement over the weekend.
“Wimmer becomes the Potters seventh signing of the summer following the captures of Darren Fletcher, Josh Tymon, Kurt Zouma, Bruno Martins Indi, Maxim Choupo-Moting and Jesé Rodriguez.
“The 24-year-old made 31 appearances for Spurs following his arrival from German Bundesliga side FC Koln in 2015.
“He made such an impression in his maiden campaign in the capital that he was rewarded with a new five-year contract last summer, but he became increasingly frustrated by his lack of game time at White Hart Lane during the 2016/17 campaign.
“The powerful, athletic and composed central defender has been linked with a move to numerous clubs in the Premier League and across the continent this summer, but has opted to make a move to the Potteries.”
On the deal, manager Mark Hughes said: “Kevin is an undoubted talent and he will significantly add to the quality of the group of players that I already have at my disposal.
“We put a real emphasis on trying to enhance the defensive areas of the squad this summer and we feel that we have been able to do that.
“We brought Kurt Zouma in earlier in the window and managed to bring Bruno Martins Indi back to the Club following his loan spell last season, so bringing Kevin here too, a player I admire greatly, gives me real strength in depth in those central positions.”
