Manchester United’s pursuit for David De Gea replacement has intensified

Manchester United have stepped up their pursuit of Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak in case they fail to keep hold of David De Gea this summer, reports ESPN.

De Gea is back on Real Madrid’s radar this summer and appears to be on the verge of joining the reigning European champions, two years on from his failed move to the Bernabeu.

Jose Mourinho revealed in the week that he is hopeful of keeping the Spain international at Old Trafford for next year but the signs do not look positive after the United manager confirmed De Gea had played his final game for the club this season.

Joel Pereira will be handed his first ever United start in their final home game of the season against Crystal Palace, while Sergio Romero will return between the sticks for their Europa League final with Ajax next week, meaning De Gea may have already played his final game for the club.

While United insist they are hopeful of keeping De Gea, there is a feeling that a bid from Madrid that would make the Spaniard the most expensive goalkeeper of all-time would suit all parties and Mourinho’s side would then turn their attentions to Oblak.

The Atletico goalkeeper has a stunning €100m release clause, which wouldn’t be beyond United’s means, but could potentially mean they would pay that price twice this summer with Oblak’s Atletico teammate, Antoine Griezmann, also at the top of their summer wishlist.

In the last three La Liga campaigns Oblak has kept at least eight more clean sheets than any other goalkeeper (46).
