Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has been called up to the Spain squad for the first time in his career as cover for injury doubts Saul Niguez and Thiago Alcantara, reports The Daily Mail.
In a star-studded generation Herrera has never managed to work his way into contention with the Spanish national side but has finally been rewarded following his impressive displays with United in recent weeks.
New Spain manager Julen Lopetegui worked with Herrera during his time as Spain Under-21 manager and has turned to the United midfielder ahead of Juan Mata and Cesc Fabregas as cover for Saul and Thiago for upcoming matches against Italy and Albania.
United are unbeaten in three league games with Herrera in the starting XI (66.7% win ratio) this season compared to the four games without him (50% win ratio). Not only that but United are scoring more goals per game (2.67) with Herrera in the team from the start compared to when they haven’t had him in the starting XI (1.25).
