Antonio Conte will turn his attention to Fiorentina defender Marcos Alonso as he looks to strengthen the club’s defence before the deadline, reports the Daily Telegraph.
Chelsea manager Conte has been frustrated in his club’s attempts to improve the backline, having missed out on a number of key targets.
Leonardo Bonucci, Kalidou Koulibaly and Alessia Romagnoli have all been approached, but the Blues’ advances have all been rejected by the Serie A trio.
Conte is now tipped to explore the possibility of Alonso, who harbours Premier League and Championship experience following stints with Bolton and Sunderland.
The Chelsea boss is hoping to sign at least two defenders before the transfer window shuts, with competition for full-backs Branislav Ivanovic and Cesar Azpilicueta and a new centre-back high on the wish list.
It is thought Fiorentina are demanding £21m for Alonso, 25, who made 26 league starts for the Viola last season.
