Manchester United legend interested in vacant Southampton post
Ryan Giggs wants to return to football as Southampton manager to kickstart his managerial career, reports The Daily Mail.
The former Manchester United winger has been out of work since opting against staying on Jose Mourinho’s coaching staff last summer and has been waiting patiently for the right job to come around.
Giggs was interviewed by Swansea midway through last season but the 43-year-old has earmarked Southampton as the ideal club to launch his managerial career given their strong foundations and formidable youth academy.
Southampton have been looking for a new manager since sacking Claude Puel on Wednesday night but it remains to be seen whether the south coast club would be willing to put their future in the hands of a manager with almost no experience.
Giggs’ managerial career spans four games as United boss at the end of the 2013/14 campaign in the wake of David Moyes’ departure, although he did spend the following two years as Louis van Gaal's assistant manager.
Southampton endured a disappointing season in Puel’s only campaign in charge of the club, finishing 17 points worse off than they did in 2015/16.
