Tottenham defender wants new long-term deal

Jan Vertonghen has revealed he is keen to sign a new long-term deal at Tottenham.

The Belgium international’s current contract is due to expire at the end of the season but Tottenham will soon trigger their option to another 12 months.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side are yet to discuss terms about a fresh deal with Vertonghen but the 31-year-old believes he has many more years at the top.

“I’ve got a contract until 2020 – there’s an option and Tottenham will take that option,” he told London Evening Standard. “So I’ve got a year-and-a-half left and we’ll see. The way I feel now, I’ve got at least four or five good years left in the tank.

“There are no talks [with the club], but that’s something to discuss. At the moment I feel great at Tottenham. It’s a club with unbelievable potential – not just the players but everything around it. Everyone wants to be part of it.”

Vertonghen has developed into one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League since joining Tottenham from Ajax in the summer of 2012.

With Toby Alderweireld set to leave at the end of the season, Tottenham would have a huge hole to fill if they ended up losing Vertonghen as well.

Surprisingly, however, Tottenham have a better win ratio in the Premier League since August 2015 when Vertonghen has not started (69.6%) compared to when he has featured from the off (59.8%).
