According to reports emerging from The Daily Mail last night, Asmir Begovic could play a key role in Chelsea’s remaining fixtures this season as doubts over Thibaut Courtois’ future with the club persist.
Incoming boss Antonio Conte held talks with caretaker manager Guus Hiddink this week along with a number of Chelsea stars as he weighs up who should be kept on or moved on ahead of next season.
After a previous failed attempt at signing David de Gea from Manchester United, Real Madrid could turn to Thibaut Courtois. The Belgian would likely find it difficult to reject a move back to the city that arguably saw his best form - even if it was for a rival.
During his loan spell at Atletico Madrid, Courtois kept 55 clean sheets in his 3 La Liga seasons, at least 18 more than any other goalkeeper.
Courtois’ recent comments while away on international duty will have done little to discourage Chelsea from considering offers for the goalkeeper.
While Chelsea's results may not do much to reflect on his performances, Begovic did an admiral job earlier in the season as he stood in for an injured Courtois. In his 11 Premier League games this season, Begovic had a save percentage of 66% while Courtois had a save percentage of 60.8% after 11 Premier League starts this term.
If Begovic seizes the opportunity he’s about to be handed by Hiddink, there is every chance he could start next season as Antonio Conte’s number one.
