Atletico Madrid interested in Manchester United midfielder

Atletico Madrid want to sign Ander Herrera when his Manchester United contract expires at the end of the season, reports Diario AS.

Herrera is yet to sign a new contract with United but Jose Mourinho’s side do have an option to another 12 months that they will trigger if they fail to resolve his future.

The Spain international established himself as an important player under Mourinho last season and there were suggestions he could replace Wayne Rooney as United captain.

However, the 28-year-old started the season out of the team and was only afforded a run in the starting XI following injuries to Paul Pogba, Maraoune Fellaini and Michael Carrick.

It remains to be seen what sort of future Herrera has at Old Trafford and Diego Simeone is understood to be keen to prise the midfielder back to Spain at the end of the campaign.

Since the start of last season, Herrera has completed more tackles (106) and interceptions (94) than any other United player in the Premier League.
