Borussia Dortmund forward Marco Reus has been rocked by another long-term injury with news he will be sidelined for the next six months after sustaining cruciate ligament damage in the DFB Pokal final on Saturday, reports BILD, via ESPN.
Reus has endured a nightmare with injuries throughout his career and was forced off at half-time in Dortmund’s 2-1 win over Frankfurt as Thomas Tuchel’s side ended a run of three successive DFB Pokal final defeats.
Dortmund’s triumph in the cup is the first piece of major silverware Reus has won in his career but it was tainted by news he may not feature again until next year.
“Maybe it’s a bit of anterior cruciate ligament. You’ll have to ask the doc. It doesn’t matter today,” Reus told ARD, via ESPN after Saturday’s final.
Arsenal had earmarked Reus as their top transfer target to replace Alexis Sanchez if they fail to convince their star man to sign a new contract, but news of another injury to the Germany international will surely put those plans up in flames.
The 27-year-old had already missed much of the season through injury and that had limited the winger to just 16 league starts. Despite being restricted to so few minutes on the pitch, Reus still played a direct hand in a league goal every 108.2 minutes of action.
