Madrid fear losing race to sign Chelsea’s Belgian ace

Real Madrid are concerned Chelsea will hand Thibaut Courtois a lucrative new deal in order to stop their interest in the Belgian goalkeeper, reports The Daily Telegraph.

Courtois, 24, has re-emerged as a top target for Madrid after rediscovering his best form for the Blues this season during their remarkable ascent up the Premier League table.

Chelsea are six points clear at the top of the league following a stunning 12-match winning run in which Courtois has kept 10 clean sheets.

The Belgium international, who spent three incredibly successful years on loan at Atletico Madrid before returning to Chelsea in 2014, has previously been relatively coy on his long-term future at Stamford Bridge.

Courtois’ current deal is due to expire in 2019 and Madrid fear the Premier League leaders will look to increase his current £100,000-a-week wages in excess of £150,000-a-week to ward off their interest at the end of the season.

Of goalkeepers to have featured in more than five Premier League matches this season, only two have a better save success rate than Courtois (76.1%).
