Manchester United interested in shock move for Chelsea veteran
Manchester United have been put on red alert following news Chelsea will allow Gary Cahill to leave in January, reports The Daily Mirror.
Cahill has been a tremendous servant for Chelsea over the last six years but has dropped completely out of favour under Maurizio Sarri this season.
The 32-year-old is aware his best years are coming to an end and does not want to waste them sitting on the bench at Chelsea.
Chelsea acknowledge Cahill’s contributions to the club since his arrival and will not stand in the defender’s way if he wants to leave in January.
There were suggestions Cahill would stay at Chelsea following their impressive start to the season but Jose Mourinho is reportedly interested in reuniting with the England international at Old Trafford.
United have been very poor at the back this season and Mourinho is desperate to sign an experienced centre-back in January after missing out on one in the summer.
Cahill’s current Chelsea deal is due to expire at the end of the season but Sarri’s side are willing to let him leave on loan in January, effectively ending his Stamford Bridge career.
It remains to be seen whether Chelsea would entertain business with United, but clubs like Southampton, Watford and West Ham are all expected to express an interest.
Cahill has only managed one substitute appearance in the Premier League this season but has started three of their first four Europa League group games. He has completed 93.6% of his passes in Europe this season.
