City boss eyes Ter Stegen alternative

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is weighing up a move for Sporting Lisbon goalkeeper Rui Patricio as an alternative to No.1 target Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, reports The Daily Record

Guardiola is keen to sign a new goalkeeper before the transfer window shuts after dropping Joe Hart for their season opener against Sunderland on Saturday.

City have been heavily linked with Barcelona shot stopper Ter Stegen, but the La Liga champions are only prepared to let the Germany international leave if his €80m (£69m) release clause is activated.

As a result, Guardiola is now looking at making a move for Patricio if City fail to sign Ter Stegen. The 28-year-old still has a €45m (£38.8m) release clause in his Sporting contract but his wages would be significantly lower than the Barcelona goalkeepers.

Patricio was part of Portugal's Euro 2016 winning squad and made at least three more saves inside the penalty area than any other goalkeeper in the competition (13).
