Real Madrid enter race for Chelsea target

Chelsea are the Premier League frontrunner for Kai Havertz's signature but now face competition from Real Madrid for the Bayer Leverkusen starlet, claims The Sun.

Frank Lampard's side are expected to turn their attention to signing Havertz after getting a deal over the line for RB Leipzig's Timo Werner.

Chelsea have already pipped Liverpool to Werner's signature and now intend to steal a march on their Premier League rivals for Havertz.

The 20-year-old midfielder has been heavily linked with a move away from boyhood club Leverkusen after exploding into career-best form since the turn of the year.

Even the three-month pause due to the Coronavirus outbreak failed to derail Havertz's form, as he has impressively managed to pick up from where he left off since the Bundesliga resumed in May.

Leverkusen still hope Havertz will opt to stay at the club for at least one more season but reluctantly accept he could leave this summer if they receive a sufficient offer.

Chelsea's hopes of landing the £70m-rated attacker have been complicated by the fact Madrid are also keen on the Germany international.

After only scoring and assisting three goals in 14 league games during the first half of the 2019/20 campaign, Havertz has remarkably played a direct hand in 13 goals in 12 Bundesliga outings in 2020.
