Antalyaspor sign former Tottenham midfielder

Antalyaspor have announced they have signed Queens Park Rangers midfielder Sandro on a free transfer.

Sandro, 27, has spent the three seasons with the Championship outfit after initially moving to England to join Tottenham as a 21-year-old back in 2010.

The former Brazil international has suffered with injuries in recent years but has proven to be a formidable central midfielder with a run of games under his belt.

Sandro has put pen to paper on a three-and-a-half-year deal with Antalyaspor and the club’s president, and chairman of WhoScored.com, Ali Ozturk, believes the dominant central midfielder can reignite his career with the club and force his way back into contention with the Brazilian national team.

“He came to us free of charge from his club,” Ozturk told the club’s official website.

“We have signed a player who plays defensive midfield or as a number 6 and is one of the best players in his position who has big goals which overlap with the goals of our club.

“We are happy, I hope that when he wears the Antalyaspor shirt, we hope to see him again in the Brazil national team.”

Sandro hasn’t featured for Brazil since 2012 but should be looking to force his way back into the reckoning with a regular berth at Antalyaspor, who will be looking to cement a place in the top half of the league for the remainder of the season.

The Brazilian midfielder, who is known for being a lively character in the dressing room, has hailed his time in England and is now looking forward to embracing what he describes as a ‘magnificent’ project at Antalyaspor.

“Firstly I am very happy to take part in this beautiful project of Antalyaspor,” Sandro told the club’s official website. “I would like to thank everyone who has supported me in England in the last six-and-a-half years.”

Sandro has been limited to little game time over the last two seasons, starting just 17 league matches during spells at QPR and West Brom. A tough tackle, Sandro averages 2.5 tackles per league game since the 2010/11 campaign.
