Manchester City star suffers ankle ligament damage

Manchester City have announced Leroy Sane suffered ankle ligament damage in Sunday’s 2-0 win away to Cardiff in the FA Cup fourth round but have refused to put a timeframe on his recovery.

Sane was forced off at the interval in City’s clash with Championship side Cardiff after he was on the receiving end of a horror Joe Bennett tackle that was only deemed a yellow card offence by referee Lee Mason.

Pep Guardiola went berserk at the match officials after the match before going on the call for added player protection in his post-match news conference and City have now confirmed the extent of Sane’s injury.

“Manchester City can confirm that winger Leroy Sane sustained ankle ligament damage during the FA Cup win over Cardiff,” a statement read on the club’s official website.

“The Germany international was substituted off at half-time following a challenge from Bluebirds player Joe Bennett.

“Sane has since undergone sans that confirm the 22-year-old is set for a spell on the sidelines - although no timeframe has yet been set for his return.”

The City whizz has been in sublime form for Guardiola’s side this season and his absence will be a real blow for their ambitions of winning an unprecedented quadruple.

Sane has played a direct hand in 17 goals in 22 Premier League appearances this season, while only Neymar (11) has provided more assists in Europe’s top five leagues thus far (Sane - 10).
