Bayern Munich fast track deal for Philipp Lahm successor

Bayern Munich have been forced to accelerate a deal to sign Bayer Leverkusen right-back Benjamin Henrichs following Philipp Lahm’s impromptu decision to announce his retirement at the end of the current season, reports SportBild, via Get German Football.

Despite the fact Lahm has 18 months left to run on his current deal, it was long known before Tuesday’s announcement that Lahm was set to hang up his boots. Nevertheless, Bayern have still announced they were surprised at the timing of Lahm’s announcement having been led to believe the news would be announced together.

Bayern were hopeful Lahm would see out the remainder of his contract before making a move to make 19-year-old Henrichs his long-term successor in the summer of 2018.

However, Carlo Ancelotti’s side will now be forced to accelerate their pursuit of the Germany international and look to secure his services at the end of the season despite the fact he still has three-and-a-half years left to run on his existing deal with Leverkusen.

No player has won more tackles and interceptions combined in the Champions League than Henrichs this season (48).
