Sunderland sign former England international

Sunderland have announced they have signed free agent Joleon Lescott on a short-deal until the end of the season.

Lescott, 34, has been without a club since having his contract terminated with Greek side AEK Athens in November after suffering a serious knee injury.

The former Manchester City and Aston Villa defender only managed four games for the Greek side before suffering a detached cartilage that ruled him out for at least three months.

However, the ex-England international has returned to the Premier League with David Moyes’ Sunderland outfit desperate for players given their severe injury crisis.

With Lamine Kone away on Africa Cup of Nations duty and Paddy McNair out for the remainder of the season, coupled with the fact Papy Djilobodji now faces the prospect of a four-match ban, Moyes is currently incredibly short of options at the heart of his defence, although it remains to be seen what shape Lescott is currently in.

Lescott spent last season with Aston Villa and is now looking at the reality of being relegated from the Premier League in successive seasons with Sunderland currently bottom of the league and three points adrift of safety.
