Emre Can has revealed contract talks with Liverpool have been put on hold until the end of the season but he is adamant he is committed to the club long-term.
The Germany international’s long-term future at Liverpool was cast into doubt over the weekend after it emerged he was demanding more than double his current £35,000-a-week salary in recent contract talks.
Can, however, has revealed on-going negotiations with Liverpool have been put on hold until the end of the season so he can concentrate on helping the club secure a top four finish.
“I read it was about money but it isn’t,” The Daily Mail quote Can as saying. “We’ve had a few good meetings and everything is fine. I am happy at Liverpool. You never know what will happen in football but I am happy and still contracted here.
“Everything is fine and I just wanted to say it is never about the money. It is about the future, what happens. The last few months, the most important thing has been that I am pain-free [from a calf issue] and we have spoken more about that than the contract.
“We will speak in the next few weeks and months and see what happens. I want to play injury-free. The meetings are with my agent but I am very happy at Liverpool. In the future I can play for many years at Liverpool.”
Can struggled at the start of Liverpool’s clash with Burnley on Sunday but popped up with the winner with 30 minutes remaining after his rasping long-range effort proved too powerful for Tom Heaton in the Burnley goal.
The 24-year-old has now scored four goals in the Premier League this season, twice as many as he had managed in his first two campaigns at Liverpool combined.
