Stoke City have confirmed attacking midfielder Ibrahim Afellay has suffered knee ligament injury and could be ruled out for eight months.
Afellay, 30, has been dogged by serious injuries throughout his career but looked to have overcome them this season after joining Stoke from Barcelona last summer.
However, the Netherlands international twisted his knee in training and manager Mark Hughes has confirmed he may have already played his last match in 2016.
“It’s unfortunate. He’ll come back stronger with our support,” Hughes told Sky Sports before Saturday’s 4-0 defeat against Manchester City, via BBC Sport.
Only Ki Sung-yueng (91.2%) has a better pass success rate than Afellay (90.2%) in the Premier League this season.
