Leicester poised to appoint former Southampton boss

Leicester interim head coach Michael Appleton will step down with an unbeaten record in charge as the Foxes look set to appoint former Southampton manager Claude Puel, claims The Daily Mail.

Appleton has overseen wins against Swansea and Leeds since Craig Shakespeare was sacked last week but his position at the club is now up in the air.

Leicester are in advanced talks with Puel, who has been out of work since being sacked by Southampton at the end of last season, and Appleton’s position at the club is one of the last hurdles to overcome in negotiations.

The Foxes would like Appleton to stay on as No.2 at the club, but Puel is also keen to bring in Pascal Plancque, who was his assistant at Saint Mary’s.

Puel guided Southampton to eighth in the Premier League during his sole season in charge of the club last term and also steered them into the League Cup final where they lost to Manchester United.

However, the Frenchman failed to impress Southampton fans during his tenure and he effectively lost the job after the club finished 17 points worse off than the 2015/16 campaign.
