Manchester United eye sensational deal for former defender

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is considering a stunning move to re-sign Jonny Evans from West Brom in January, reports The Daily Mirror

Mourinho is weighing up whether to sign a new centre-back in January following news Eric Bailly may not play again this season.

The United manager still has Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones to pick from, while Daley Blind can also act as cover at centre-back if required.

However, Mourinho believes United's decision to sell Evans was a mistake and may now rival Manchester City and Arsenal for his signature next month.

The 29-year-old left United to join West Brom in August 2015 after being deemed surplus to requirements by former manager Louis van Gaal and has established himself as a key defender for the Baggies since then.

Evans was heavily linked with a move to City in the summer but Pep Guardiola’s side failed to match West Brom’s £30m valuation.

Alan Pardew’s side are determined to fend off January interest in Evans and will make one last attempt to secure his long-term future by rewarding him with a bumper new deal.

However, Evans, who will face former side United on Sunday, is aware this could be his last opportunity to play Champions League football again and it remains to be seen how his future will pan out next month.

Since the start of last season, only Simon Francis (208) has won possession in the defensive third more times than Evans (204) in the Premier League.
