Arsenal target RB Leipzig defender

Arsenal are interested in signing RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano, claims ESPN.

The Gunners have been poor defensively this season and Unai Emery has made bolstering his defensive options a priority this summer.

Arsenal have already been heavily linked with a move for Manchester United defender Eric Bailly but the Ivory Coast international is not the only centre-back on their radar.

However, it has now emerged the north London outfit are keen on Upamecano and will intensify their interest if they are given any encouragement from the Bundesliga side.

Upamecano’s current contract is due to expire in 2021 and Leipzig are in the process of trying to extend his stay at the club.

The 20-year-old dropped down the pecking order at Leipzig this season and lost his place in the starting XI to Ibrahima Konate.

Leipzig’s preference is to secure Upamecano’s long-term future but they are not opposed to his sale this summer.

Since making his Bundesliga debut during the 2016/17 campaign, Leipzig have a better win ratio when Upamecano has not started in the league (58.2%) compared to when he has featured from the off (46.8%).
