Manchester United boss confirms interest in Real Madrid star

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed he will look to sign Gareth Bale if Real Madrid are prepared to sell this summer.

Bale’s future at Madrid has been uncertain almost as soon as he joined from Tottenham for a then world-record deal in 2013.

The Wales international has been linked with a move to United almost every summer since moving to Spain and there have been fresh reports linking the 28-year-old with a move away from the European champions as they weigh up a move for Monaco teenager Kylian Mbappe.

Last season was a nightmare for Bale with injuries and Mourinho has confirmed he will fight for his signature if he decides he wants to leave Madrid this summer.

“Well if he’s playing tomorrow, no I wouldn’t think that, it would be because he’s in the coach’s plans and the club’s plans, because he also has that motivation to continue at Real Madrid,” The Daily Mirror quote Mourinho as saying when asked whether he would try and sign Bale this summer.

“So I haven’t even thought about the possibility. If he’s not in the club’s plans, that with the arrival of another player would mean he was on his way out, I will try to be waiting for him on the other side and fight with other coaches that would want him on their team.

“But if he plays tomorrow, that is the best confirmation that he is still wanted by the team.”

United are due to face Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup on Tuesday evening having already beaten the La Liga champions on penalties in a pre-season friendly in America earlier this summer, which Bale featured in.

No player has scored more headed goals than Bale (12) in La Liga since August 2015.
