Roma eye Real Madrid forward

Roma sporting director Monchi will move for Real Madrid forward Lucas Vazquez if they fail to sign Leicester winger Riyad Mahrez, reports Gianluca Di Marzio.

The Serie A giants have made signing a new forward a priority this summer but are struggling to convince Leicester to lower their £50m valuation of Mahrez.

The Algeria international has told Leicester he wants to leave this summer but his preference is to remain in the Premier League, which perhaps explains why he hasn’t attempted to force through a move to Roma.

Mahrez only signed a new long-term deal last summer and that has given Leicester the upper hand in negotiations, having already rejected two offers from Roma.

Monchi is not prepared to meet Leicester’s stunning valuation and believes their latest offer, which is believed to be around £30m, is a fair one.

The Roma chief has already revealed they will not wait around for Mahrez and now it has emerged they will soon turn their attentions to Vazquez if they fail to make any headway with the Foxes.

Vazquez is keen to work for his chance under Zinedine Zidane but first-team opportunities will be few and far between for the Spanish forward. Madrid are still trying to sign Monaco striker Kylian Mbappe, while Marco Asensio is ahead of the 26-year-old in the pecking order.

He made 33 appearances in La Liga last season but only 12 of those came as starts. In fact, only Sergio Canales (24) made more substitute appearances in La Liga last season than Vazquez (21).
