Ex-Villa captain invited to train with AZ

Former Aston Villa captain Ron Vlaar has been invited to train with Dutch side AZ Alkmaar in a bid to step up his recovery from injury, according to FootballOranje.com

Vlaar, 30, was released by Villa at the end of last summer after running down his contract but has spent the last six months recovering from a reoccurring knee problems.

The Netherlands international had hoped to return to Feyenoord, where he played for six years prior to his move to Villa in 2011. However, that failed to materialise and he now looks set to return to his first senior club, AZ.

Vlaar had been heavily tipped with moves to Manchester United and Southampton over the last year, but saw those moves scuppered by injury.

During his three-year stint in the Premier League, Villa lost a huge 63.9% of the 36 matches in which Vlaar was not able to start (23), compared to just 43.6% of the 78 matches when the Dutch defender was in the starting XI (34).
