Manchester United midfielder keen to extend stay

Ander Herrera wants to extend his Manchester United contract contrary to reports he will seek a return to Spain next summer, claims The Daily Mail.

The Spanish midfielder has entered the final 12 months of his current deal and is yet to agree terms for a renewal.

Reports emerged from Spain suggesting Herrera will open talks with boyhood club Athletic Club in January about a summer move when he will be a free agent.

However, it is now claimed that Herrera’s family are settled in Manchester and his preference is to extend his stay at Old Trafford.

Herrera has spent the last four years at United but has struggled to nail down a regular starting berth during that time.

The 29-year-old enjoyed his best season for United during Jose Mourinho’s first year at the club, where he was voted the club’s player of the year.

Herrera started 27 league matches that season and played an integral part in their EFL Cup and Europa League success.

However, he has only started 14 of a possible 42 league matches since then and his future is far from certain.

Under Mourinho, United have a far superior win ratio in the Premier League when Herrera has not started (66.7%) compared to the matches he has featured from the off (46.3%).
