Atletico Madrid have announced Antoine Griezmann has agreed to extend his stay by 12 months to keep him at the club until 2022.
Griezmann was expected to leave Diego Simeone’s side to join Manchester United this summer but opted against a move away after the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld a FIFA-imposed transfer ban, which would have prevented Atletico from signing a replacement.
The 26-year-old has now agreed to sign a contract extension that has been on the table from Atletico for the last few months that will significantly increase Griezmann’s pay and the France international has moved to apologise to the supporters for this saga.
“The first thing I want to do is apologise to the people who have misunderstood my statements [in the past],” Griezmann told the club’s official website.
“Maybe I could express myself better or some would like to see no headlines, but since I have arrived I give everything for my club, my colleagues and my coaching staff and I am very happy to have another season with you all.”
However, United have been given hope in rekindling a deal at the end of next season with news Griezmann’s release clause has not been increased and they can resurrect a €100m (£88m) deal next summer.
In the last three La Liga campaigns only Lionel Messi (19) and Cristiano Ronaldo (13) have scored more goals from outside the area than Griezmann (11).
