Sunderland are considering a move for Bayern Munich outcast Jan Kirchoff, according to Sky Sports.
Sam Allardyce is reportedly on the market to bolster his leaky backline this month and has earmarked Kirchoff as a possible target.
Kirchoff, 25, has been at Bayern since 2013 but is yet to start a league game for them and spent last season on loan at Schalke where he made 14 Bundesliga appearances.
The Black Cats are also in the process of signing Lorient’s Lamine Kone and have also enquired about Steven Caulker, who has struggled to make any impression at Southampton on loan from Queens Park Rangers this season.
Sunderland could do with an immediate improvement at the back if they are to avoid relegation. No team has let in more goals in the Premier League this season than Sunderland (39).
