Aston Villa are weighing up an offer for Lorient 1 striker Benjamin Moukandjo, according to L’Equipe.
Moukandjo, 27, has been somewhat of a surprise package in Ligue 1 this season having already surpassed his best ever league tally over the last six campaigns.
Remi Garde is expected to be active in the transfer market this month, but his intentions are still unknown. Villa haven’t won since the opening day of the season and are 11 points adrift of safety, with many already expecting them to be relegated.
Some have called for Villa to begin planning for life in the Championship already, but Moukandjo’s capture would suggest Garde is still hopeful of pulling off one of the greatest escapes in Premier League history.
Lorient understandably have no intention of selling their most in-form striker and Villa’s interest could be short lived with the Cameroon international currently sidelined for three weeks with a hamstring injury.
Only Zlatan Ibrahimovic (15) has scored more goals in Ligue 1 this season than Moukandjo (11).
