Hamburg have earmarked Borussia Dortmund defender Neven Subotic as one of their top transfer targets this summer, reports German newspaper Bild.
Subotic, 27, still has more than two years left on his current deal at Dortmund and was linked with a move to Liverpool in January.
However, Liverpool’s decision to sign Schalke centre-back Joel Matip could spell the end to their interest in the Serbia international, paving the way for Hamburg to make an unchallenged run at signing the defender.
Subotic had been a regular under Jurgen Klopp but he has found first-team opportunities much harder to come by under Thomas Tuchel since the start of the season. In fact, he has only featured in three Bundesliga games and two Europa League matches.
