West Ham eye £20m January move for Swansea ace

David Moyes wants to make Swansea defender Alfie Mawson one of his first signings as West Ham manager, reports The Guardian.

Money will be made available for Moyes to spend in January and the Scotsman wants to address the Hammers’ defence despite keeping three clean sheets in a row in the Premier League.

Nevertheless, West Ham are reportedly preparing a £20m bid for Mawson in a bid to prise the England U21 international away from the Liberty Stadium.

Swansea are determined to keep hold of Mawson and are still in the process of trying to negotiate a new deal for the 23-year-old, who only has 18 months remaining on his existing contract.

Losing Mawson would be a huge blow for a Swansea side bottom of the Premier League and without a permanent manager.

Swansea failed to replace Fernando Llorente and Gylfi Sigurdsson over the summer and are now paying a very heavy price for that, while losing Mawson could end their chances of survival this season.

Mawson has started all 18 of Swansea’s Premier League matches this season and while they are bottom of the league, their defensive record (25 goals conceded) isn’t that bad. In fact, they rank ninth for goals conceded in the division and have even let in fewer than Leicester (26), who are ninth in the league standings.
