Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris has revealed he has put on-going contract talks with the club on hold in order to concentrate on the club’s busy Christmas schedule.
Lloris, 29, has no intention of leaving Tottenham but contract talks had reportedly slowed as the two parties failed to agree terms, with the club unwilling to match his £100,000-a-week demands.
The France international has less than two-and-a-half years remaining on his existing deal but has eased fears among fans that he could leave, just a day after Harry Kane also moved to quash rumours about a potential exit.
“There are times during a season when, as a player, you have to think about yourself and there are times when you have to think about the team – and this is one of those times when it is more important to be focused on the team,” Sky Sports quote Lloris as saying.
“I don’t think this is the right moment to talk about my contract, but I want to repeat my commitment is to the club and there is no rush. I am under contract until 2019 and I enjoy a great relationship with Mauricio Pochettino, Daniel Levy and, of course, the fans, so there is no need for anybody to worry.
“We will see what will happen, but at the moment I am focused only on Monaco and the other important matches coming up because it is a busy time of the year.”
Tottenham’s dramatic win over West Ham at the weekend was their first in eight matches in all competitions to remain four points behind league leaders Chelsea, whom they face at the weekend after their tough Champions League trip to Monaco on Tuesday.
In the last three Premier League campaigns only Joe Hart and David de Gea (both 29) have kept more clean sheets than Lloris (25).
