Which record breaker forced their way into the Serie A team of the week?
Not only did Napoli’s 2-0 win away to Verona momentarily put them top of Serie A, but the game also bore witness to a record breaking display from midfielder Jorginho.
The 23-year-old has been regularly linked with a move away from the club in the last six months, but Napoli will be desperate to keep hold of the holding midfielder after he provided a monumental contribution in their win at the weekend.
Jorginho completed a staggering 181 passes in his 90-minute display, which is a feat only Xabi Alonso can claim to have bettered across Europe’s top five leagues in the last seven seasons (185 – vs Cologne, 27 Sept 2014).
His record-breaking performance unsurprisingly ranks him (92.3) between Marco Verratti (96.7) and Alonso (91.7) for most passes per game across Europe’s premier leagues this season.
Included in his WhoScored man of the match performance (8.82 rating) also featured seven more key passes than the entire Verona team combined (9) and at least two more tackles completed than any of his teammates on display at the Stadio Bentegodi (4).
