Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce will travel to meet with Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho later this week about keeping Sam Johnstone at the club next season.
Johnstone joined Villa in January on loan until the end of the season and Bruce is keen to retain the goalkeeper for another year after he finished the campaign strongly.
The 24-year-old won’t get first-team football at United next season but it also unlikely that Villa will be the only side interested in his services, which could prove a stumbling block for Bruce’s side.
“I have had a conversation with Jose on the telephone [about Johnstone],” The Sun quotes Bruce as saying. “I am now going to see him. We hope there is good news there."
After his initial struggles at the club, Johnstone settled and was one of the most consistent goalkeepers in the Championship towards the end of the season.
In fact, Johnstone kept the most clean sheets in the Championship in 2017 (8).
