Mourinho hints Fellaini is close to new Manchester United deal
Jose Mourinho says Marouane Fellaini is close to signing a new Manchester United contract.
Fellaini’s current deal is due to expire at the end of the season and the midfielder has already turned down fresh terms from the Red Devils.
The Belgium international was widely expected to leave United at the end of the season but Mourinho has now hinted the club have made a breakthrough in talks.
“I think so. I think a player that grabs the crest after scoring is telling clearly that he wants to stay,” The Daily Express quote Mourinho as saying after Sunday’s win over Arsenal.
“I want him to stay, the club wants him to stay, I think he will stay, it is nearly there.”
Fellaini came off the bench to score a stoppage time winner in United’s 2-1 victory over Arsenal, securing a top-four finish for the club.
The 30-year-old has endured a nightmare season with on-going knee problems, limiting him to just four starts in the Premier League and a further 11 appearances as a substitute.
Despite struggling for playing time, Fellaini has still weighed in with four league goals for Mourinho’s side.
In fact, only Romelu Lukaku (10) and Anthony Martial (5) have scored more home league goals for United than Fellaini (4) this season.
