Dortmund summer signing set for loan move away

Borussia Dortmund summer signing Mikel Merino will be sent out on loan for the remainder of the season when the January transfer window opens, reports Reviersport, via Get German Football.

Merino, 20, was one of eight players to join Thomas Tuchel’s side over the summer but the former Osasuna defender has struggled for game time in their star-studded squad.

Tuchel’s side are now willing to let the Spain Under-21 international leave in January to continue his development with league rivals Cologne reportedly interested in his services, although the player is understood to want a return to his former club.

Merino has only featured three times in the Bundesliga this season, with more than two months separating his only league starts for Dortmund. However, the youngster has displayed a willingness to get on the ball whenever called upon. In fact, only Thiago (115) averages more touches per league game in the Bundesliga this season than Merino (104).
