Barcelona weigh up shock move for former midfielder

Barcelona are interested in the prospect of bringing Southampton midfielder Oriol Romeu back to the Camp Nou this summer, reports Marca.

Romeu left Barcelona to join Chelsea in 2011 but has only really flourished since arriving at Southampton two years ago.

The 25-year-old has been one of Southampton’s best players this season and his performances haven’t gone unnoticed by his former club, even if his playing style is slightly different to what we have become accustomed to seeing from Barcelona in recent years.

While Romeu is no slouch on the ball, he is essentially a destroyer in the middle of the park and has been a really effective weapon for Southampton in breaking down opposition attacks.

Barcelona, who still haven’t appointed a new manager for next season, are keen to sign a suitable understudy to Sergio Busquets and Andres Iniesta and believe Romeu would fit the bill despite not offering much in the way of an attacking threat.

In the Premier League this season only and Idrissa Gueye (210) and N'Golo Kante (193)have won more tackles and interceptions combined than Romeu (183), while no player has won possession in the midfield third more times than the Southampton ace (178).
