Tottenham defender expects contract extension

Jan Vertonghen has entered the final year of his existing Tottenham deal but expects the club to exercise their right to a further 12 months.

The Belgium international has spent the last six years at Tottenham and developed into one of the best defenders in the Premier League during that time.

Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld have formed one of the best defensive partnerships in the division but both have uncertain futures.

Alderweireld was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United in the summer but nothing materialised as Jose Mourinho’s side baulked at Tottenham’s asking price.

Vertonghen, meanwhile, turns 32 in April and is unlikely to be offered a new long-term deal by Tottenham.

“My contract is expiring at the end of the season, but Tottenham have an option to extend it with one year,” London Evening Standard quote Vertonghen as saying on international duty with Belgium.

“I think they will take up the option. We’ll see what happens.”

Only Harry Maguire (295) has won possession in the defensive third more times than Vertonghen (283) since the start of the 2016/17 Premier League season.
