Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng has phoned Jose Mourinho and informed the Manchester United boss he is not interested in joining the club, reports German outlet BILD.
Boateng is free to leave Bayern this summer and emerged as a top transfer target for United in their quest to sign a new centre-back before Thursday’s deadline for English clubs.
The Germany international was part of a four-man shortlist being considered by United and the Red Devils reportedly even lodged a €25m bid for the 29-year-old earlier this week.
However, Boateng has personally thanked Mourinho for his interest but informed the Portuguese that he does not want to join United for sporting reasons.
Paris Saint-Germain remain interested in the former Manchester City defender, but it is now being suggested Boateng could remain at Bayern, where he has been since 2011.
Boateng has struggled for form and fitness in recent years, meaning the centre-back has only started 46 of Bayern’s last 102 league matches over the last three seasons.
In that time, Bayern have won 82.6% of the games Boateng has started, compared to 75% in the matches he did not feature from the off.
