Manchester City man set for new deal

Manchester City centre-back Nicolas Otamendi is set to be offered a new deal, according to ESPN.

The Argentine defender has been one of the stars of the season and has played a crucial role in City establishing a 15 point lead at the top of the Premier League table.

The Champions elect have also conceded fewer goals (12) than any other top-flight team and are well placed to secure the title.

Otamendi penned a five-year deal when he joined City from Valencia in 2015 and they are looking to extend his contract at the Etihad Stadium as reward for his good form this term.

The 29-year-old has made more passes (1734) than any other Premier League player this season and is set for talks over a extension to his current deal, with head coach Pep Guardiola recently praising Otamendi.

"We have a superman in the team, as Nico Otamendi helped us absolutely. Without Nico, it would not be possible, what we have done," Guardiola is quoted as saying by ESPN ahead of City’s trip to Crystal Palace.

"Everyone speaks about a bit of players such as Raheem [Sterling], like David [Silva], like Kevin [De Bruyne], like Sergio [Aguero], and they deserve it, but if I would like to point to a player who deserves full respect, for what they have done until now, it's Nico.

"Nico has been amazing. He is a guy who even with pain in the ankle, in the knee, in the back, he always fights. He's one the hugest competitors I've ever seen in my life.

"He was so important. I cannot imagine the situation we are in at the moment in terms of the table and how we play without him. It would have been impossible."
