United to offer veteran a new deal

Manchester United are set to offer Michael Carrick a new one-year deal to secure his services for next season, according to The Daily Mail.

The 35-year-old’s current deal, which he signed at the start of the summer, is due to expire at the end of the current campaign and his lack of involvement under Jose Mourinho had cast doubts over his future at United.

Despite his age, Carrick has been identified as the key for United to realise their potential this season and his return to the team against Arsenal on Saturday unsurprisingly coincided with United producing their best display under Mourinho

The United manager revealed his desire for Carrick to extend his stay beyond this season after their 1-1 draw with Arsenal and the Premier League giants are now reportedly preparing a contract extension for the midfielder.

“We have a good understanding,” The Daily Mail quote Mourinho as saying after Saturday’s draw. “We know when he can play. We know when he is ready and when he needs a rest.

“I am still having Michael Carrick and probably for one more season. Michael is 35 years old. It is very sad to know that time flies for every one of us.

“He is such a fantastic player and it is a pity instead of being his manager when he was 25 I am his manger when he is 35. I always loved him.”

Since the start of last season United’s win ratio (54.2%) in the league is far better with Carrick in the starting XI compared to their success when he has not started (42.3%).
