Newcastle confirm third January signing

Newcastle United have announced they have signed Andros Townsend from Tottenham on a five-and-a-half-year deal.

Townsend, 24, has barely featured for Spurs this season and had been expected to leave White Hart Lane this month after dropping down the pecking order under Mauricio Pochettino.

The Spurs winger has been desperate to make a move in order to keep his hopes of representing England at the Euro’s in the summer alive, however any team to have shown an interest have been scared off by Daniel Levy’s £14m valuation.

Steve McClaren’s side have reportedly managed to haggle that down to £12m and marks their third significant signing of month - following the arrivals of Jonjo Shelvey and Henri Saivet - as they look to steer clear off the drop zone.

"I am delighted to be here," Townsend told Newcastle's official website. "Newcastle United is a fantastic club with great fans, a great stadium and great tradition.

"As soon as I heard Newcastle were interested in me, there was only one place I wanted to go so I cannot wait to get started."

Townsend has only played in 64 minutes of Premier League action this season and hasn’t featured in the league since midway through October, instead being forced to play for the Tottenham Under-21’s.
