Liverpool join race for Premier League star

Liverpool are ready to rival Manchester City and Chelsea for Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk this summer, reports The Daily Mail.

Van Dijk, 25, hasn’t featured for Southampton since suffering a serious ankle injury in their 2-0 win over Leicester towards the end of January and the club fear the defender has already played his final game for them as a summer move away beckons.

The Netherlands international has established himself as one of the best defenders in the premier League since joining Southampton from Celtic in 2015 and all of the big clubs in England have been linked with his signature at one stage this season.

However, Liverpool are the latest club ready to step up their interest with a formal offer although they are unlikely to be given a free run at a player of Van Dijk’s quality if he is available to leave Southampton in the summer.

Since joining Southampton, Van Dijk has been awarded the WhoScored Man of the Match at least six more times than any other teammate in the Premier League (10), emphasising his importance to the club.
