Roma turn to Russia for Mahrez alternative

Roma are now interested in signing Spartak Moscow star Quincy Promes after growing frustrated in their pursuit of Riyad Mahrez, reports Gazzetta dello Sport, via Football Italia.

The Serie A giants have now had several bids for Mahrez rejected by Leicester and their latest one, a €35m (£32m) offer, would have made the Algerian the most expensive player in the club’s history.

Roma have made signing a new forward their priority for the remainder of the transfer window but may be forced to switch to a new alternative if Leicester are unwilling to lower their €40m valuation.

They have already been linked with a move for Real Madrid forward Lucas Vazquez, but now reports claim they will look to prize Promes away from Russian side Spartak.

The 25-year-old has established himself as one of the best players in Russia since joining Spartak from FC Twente in 2014 and has already been linked with a big money move to Liverpool.

In fact, of players that have made at least 30 appearances in the last three seasons, Promes has garnered the highest WhoScored rating (7.48).
