Everton enter race for Championship defender

Everton are the latest Premier League side chasing Bristol City defender Adam Webster, reports The Sun.

Webster only joined Bristol City last summer but enjoyed an impressive debut campaign for the Robins.

The 24-year-old has already been linked with moves to Newcastle and Aston Villa and now Everton are keen on the centre-back.

Everton manager Marco Silva wants to bolster his defensive options this summer following Phil Jagielka’s departure.

Kurt Zouma has also returned to Chelsea following his loan stint and his future will not be decided until the Blues know whether they can sign players or not this summer.

Everton are now weighing up alternative targets, with Webster chief among them.

Bristol City are hoping to use the interest from three Premier League clubs to drive up Webster’s asking price, as former club Ipswich are entitled to a portion of the fee.

Villa are understood to be offering £12m for Webster but Everton’s interest could trump the newly promoted outfit.

Webster finished his first season at Bristol City in the WhoScored Championship Team of the Season (7.30) and impressively won 71.4% of the aerial duels he contested.
