Chelsea extend Giroud’s stay at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea have extended Olivier Giroud’s contract to the end of next season after triggering their option to a further 12 months, claims Telefoot.

Giroud’s contract was due to expire this summer and the France international was expected to leave.

The 32-year-old dropped completely out of favour under Maurizio Sarri this season but could sensationally start next term as Chelsea’s first-choice striker.

Chelsea are still waiting to discover whether they will be able to sign players this summer after being hit with a FIFA-imposed transfer ban.

The west London outfit are not expected to prolong Gonzalo Higuain’s stay at the club following a thoroughly disappointing six months at the club.

It was suggested that Giroud would return to France this summer but now the former Arsenal striker will remain at Stamford Bridge for another 12 months.

Giroud made 27 league appearances this season but only seven of those were starts, returning four goals in that time.

The Frenchman is, however, the joint top scorer in the Europa League this season with 10 goals in 12 appearances.
