Virgil van Dijk may have already played his last game for Southampton, according to The Daily Mail.
The Dutch international has been sidelined with an ankle injury since the end of January and was expected to miss between two and three months of the season after being ruled out of the EFL Cup final against Manchester United later this month.
However, Van Dijk has reportedly told friends that he is unlikely to be fit again in time to make his comeback before the season draws to a close and with a summer exit on the cards he may never play for the club again.
The 25-year-old was heavily linked with a January move away from the club with a number of the Premier League’s biggest clubs reportedly interested in his services after establishing himself as one of the best defenders in the division.
Manchester City are among the sides linked with a move for the Southampton ace and Pep Guardiola’s side could well do with a defender of his class and consistency to help shore up what has been a shambolic defence at times this season.
In the last two Premier League campaigns only Steve Cook (341) and Ashley Williams (276) have completed more headed clearances than Van Dijk (247).
