Dele Alli explains middle-finger gesture for England

Dele Alli insists he was aiming his bizarre middle-finger gesture at teammate Kyle Walker during England’s 2-1 win over Slovakia on Monday night.

The Tottenham midfielder was pictured making the obscene gesture when the camera panned onto the 21-year-old midway through the second half of the Wembley fixture.

It lead to suggestions Alli had targeted the gesture at referee Clement Turpin after he failed to award the England midfielder a free-kick following a collision with Slovakia defender Martin Skrtel.

Fifa says it is awaiting match reports from its officials before deciding whether to open an investigation into Alli, but the youngster took to Twitter to explain his actions.

“Just to clarify, the gesture was a joke between me and my good friend Kyle Walker,” Alli wrote on his official Twitter account.
